Abstract

Pulsed Plasma Thrusters(PPTs) are reliable, relatively simple, high specific impulse and low cost that can be used in small satellites and deep space exploration. One of the main issues with solid PPTs is low efficiency. In this paper, the mechanism of energy utilization in solid PPTs was discussed to find the way to increase the efficiency of solid PPTs. A Double Pulse Discharge solid PPT, whose energy is stored in two capacitors and releases at different time, was designed base on a traditional solid PPT. As the delay time between the two pulses was about 200μs which was much longer than the solid PPT's discharge time, the secondary capacitor could not discharge.
