Abstract

The low efficiency of ablative pulsed plasma thrusters (APPT) has been criticized in applications for many years. In order to improve the efficiency of APPT, the energy distribution mechanism must be studied. Based on the parallel-electrode APPT as the research object, we measured the discharge voltage, discharge current, mass bit to estimate the impulse bit, specific impulse and the thruster efficiency at the different discharge energy levels. Then, combined with the numerical model, the energy distribution of APPT was summarized. Finally, some opinions were proposed to improve the thruster efficiency.
