Abstract
Two new polyborates [(CH3NH3)4][B14O20(OH)6] (1) and [Zn(en)2{B7O10(OH)3}] (2, en = ethylenediamine), which are constructed by different types of B7 clusters, had been synthesized under solvothermal conditions by utilizing different directing agents. Compound 1, which was directed by methylamine, has an isolated [B14O20(OH)6]4− anionic cluster constructed by [B7O10(OH)3]2− (B7-I) cluster, and then the [B14O20(OH)6]4− clusters are further linked to a 3D supramolecular framework through hydrogen bonds. Compound 2 is a coordination polymer and has a 2D layer structure constructed by [B7O10(OH)3]2− (B7-II) clusters through a four-connected mode. The 2D oxo-boron layered structures are further linked to 3D B–O–Zn network by Zn–O bonds. The band gaps of compounds 1 and 2 indicated that they could have potential applications as semiconductor and deep-UV materials, respectively.
