N2 - Polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHAs) are a diverse family of bacterially synthesized biopolyesters or bioplastics with biodegradability, biocompatibility, thermal processibilty and adjustable strengths. PHAs have been used to develop applications as bulk materials including films, articles, coating, fibers, foam materials, biofuels, chiral chemicals, medical implants and drug delivery carriers. Thanks to the next generation industrial biotechnology (NGIB), PHAs can be produced under open and continuous conditions to achieve economic competitiveness. Over the past years, NGIB combined with metabolic engineering and synthetic biology progresses very fast to produce successfully poly(3-hydroxybutyrate) (PHB), P3HB4HB copolymers of 3-hydroxybutyrate (3HB) and 4-hydroxybutyrate (4HB), PHBV of 3-hydroxybutyrate (HB) and 3-hydroxyvalerate (HV) in semi-industry scale. This chapter will describe major achievements in the PHA/PHB field.
