摘要

We present a model to represent and render tree organs by tightly integrating polygon, point and line primitives. While points and line segments are used to produce the coarser LODs of tree organs, polygons are used to ensure the quality of the finer LODs of these organs. Hence the algorithm can accelerate the rendering of tree geometry by using only a limited percentage of primitives but with good visual quality. Besides, the recently introduced geometry shader of GPU is applied to dynamically construct tree geometry in parallel, and a hierarchical data structure is created for smoothly changing the geometrical representation of tree to the desired number of primitives. Due to keep the topological relations between organs, this topology-preserving simplification algorithm can also be easily used to simulate tree self-pruning, wind sway and other kinds of deformations.
