Abstract

The modified silicas (MPS-SiO2) with different sulfhydryl group content were prepared using silica and (3-mercaptopropyl) trimethoxysilane. Silica-based sulfonic acids (SO3H-P-SiO2) with different grafting degree were prepared by sulfonation of MPS-SiO2 and were characterized by ultraviolet (UV) spectrophotometry, Fourier infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), thermogravimetric-differential thermal analysis (TG-DTA) and NO2 adsorption-desorption. The catalytic performance of silica supported propane sulfonic acid for preparation of biodiesel was investigated. The results showed that the silica supported propane sulfonic acid exhibited excellent catalytic activity, which increased with the increase of grafting degree.
