Abstract

Optical phased array devices can be classified into transmission type and reflection type generally. Based on the model of blazed phase grating, scanning performances, including scanning diffraction-efficiency and scanning angle-accuracy, of two type devices were studied. Theoretical analysis and subsequent correction with actual characteristic of the devices were conducted firstly, and approximate formulas used to describe two scanning performances was presented. Then, performances of transmission type device with incident angle of 0°and reflection type device with incident angle of 45° were simulated under the assumptive conditions. The results show that scanning diffraction-efficiency and scanning angle-accuracy of two types of devices both decrease rapidly with increased scanning angles; but efficiency of reflecting device is not symmetrical with respect of scanning angle, while that of transmission type device is symmetrical. Additionally, the influence of laser linewidth on the scanning angle-accuracy is calculated to be in the order of 10 -9 degrees.
