Abstract
To provide theoretical support for optimum design of a single-piston hydraulic free piston engine, the motion characteristic of engine is studied. The performance of a prototype engine is predicted by a model built in AMESim with the actual parameters. Then the predicted results are verified by experiment. Single-piston hydraulic free piston engine at steady condition gives singular output with good repeatability, high piston acceleration and asymmetrical cyclic process. The residence time at TDC is short and expansion process is fast. The working frequency of engine is controllable and limited by an ultimate frequency. The output flow is intermittent and output pressure is almost constant.
