Abstract

In the paper, the biomimetic composites with staggered hard platelets aligned in the soft matrix are investigated by FEM simulations. The results of simulations show that the biomimetic composites have large stiffness, high strength and good toughness. The fracture process in the biomimetic composites is simulated. It is found that the failure mainly occurs in the soft matrix, and the fracture path is dramatically zigzag and therefore very long, which consequently enhances the fracture toughness of composites. Besides, the effects of the aspect ratio of hard platelets and material parameters of the constituents on the mechanical properties are also studied.
