Abstract

This paper presents a novel compact-size (the diameter of the radiating element is only 0.05λ at the lower end of the operating band, 1.2 GHz) coplanar waveguide (CPW)-fed planar antenna with 10 dB return loss (VSWR < 2) bandwidth from 1.2 to 25 GHz, 182%, for ultra-wideband (UWB) communications. The proposed antenna consists of a circular disc and a spiral split ring resonator displayed on an inexpensive FR4 expoxy substrate. This UWB printed monopole antenna adopts CPW-fed and two tapered transmission lines for improving broadband impedance matching in the required band. Numerical simulations using finite element method (FEM) show that the radiation patterns over the mostly operation band are omni-directional in H-plane and symmetrical in E-plane, with an average gain of 4.5 dB.
