Abstract

Micro-Electro-Mechanical Systems (MEMS) gyroscopes are susceptible in acoustically harsh environments. The acoustic interference with frequency close to the mechanical resonant frequency will cause internal mechanical resonance and disrupt the output signals of MEMS gyroscope. In this paper, an intentional acoustic interference approach is proposed to achieve fully adversarial control over the output signals of capacitive MEMS gyroscopes. The response of MEMS gyroscopes' dynamic model in acoustic frequency sweep attacking environments is simulated and analyzed by Short Time Fourier Transform (STFT), by which the demodulation frequency can be found to obtain the output biasing attack. In the case of output biasing attack, MEMS gyroscope outputs a direct current (DC, 0 Hz) bias voltage. Thus, the output control of sensors can be achieved by modulating sound amplitude. The acoustic attacking experiments on six single-axis capacitive MEMS gyroscopes, ADXRS620, demonstrate the feasibility of output biasing attack. The output signals of MEMS gyroscopes can be spoofed and controlled by the intentional acoustic interference with an amplitude modulation.
