Abstract

The primary service target of design theory and methodology is designers. Based on designers' cognitive modes during design activities, the pivotal objectives of design theory and methodology research are to utilize design knowledge to generate design ideas and enhance innovation capabilities. In the realm of engineering design, the stimulatory effect of domain-specific knowledge on design is somewhat limited. As an instance of long-distance knowledge within the engineering field, interdisciplinary knowledge, particularly represented by the biology domain, holds significant application potential. However, designers often find it challenging to effectively harness this knowledge. To address this issue, we consider biology domain knowledge as long-distance knowledge and propose a knowledge transfer method tailored for engineering-biology domain design, leveraging cross-domain knowledge networks. We delve into the underlying semantic and contextual relationships between engineering and biology domain knowledge. Through sampling, we facilitate a bidirectional transfer of knowledge between these domains. Ultimately, we present two types of knowledge transfer application scenarios. In conceptual design, this method can bolster the cognitive and creative generation process, facilitate the application of biology domain knowledge in the engineering field, and assist designers in generating high-quality design ideas.
