High-gain and low-profile EBG patch antenna design

摘要

This paper presents a patch antenna design with both high-gain and low-radar cross section (RCS) characteristic. A mushroom-like electromagnetic band gap (EBG) structure with a pair of symmetrical slots is applied to a traditional patch antenna. It is verified that, the currents on the slotted EBG is better induced in the direction perpendicular to the slots. Slot-EBG cells arranged in chessboard configuration are optimized to satisfy the phase cancellation criterion and work as a parasitical radiator. Simulation results indicate that the proposed antenna get 1 dB gain enhancement within the working band and more than 7 dB RCS reduction in broadband compared to a reference antenna with ground of the same size. As a consequence, the confliction between radiation and scattering performance of patch antenna is well resolved.
