摘要
The effect of thermal degradation on mechanical properties of cast Al-Si alloys for cylinder heads is investigated. Thermal degradation has a significant deteriorating effect on the tensile strength caused by the coarsening and coalescence of the θ phase (Al2Cu) due to precipitation reaction. The dominant factor for degradation at 250 ℃ is exposure temperature, while exposure time has a greater effect at 200 ℃. Thermal degradation increases the long crack growth rate significantly due to the increase in plasticity scale ahead of the crack tip. The effective stress intensity factor range (ΔKeff) is modified for thermally exposed alloys by adding the plasticity zone size to the crack length and considering the reduction in crack resistance from the precipitates.
