Abstract

In present paper, fracture characteristics of alumina target impacted by planar plate were investigated with ANSYS/LS-DYNA finite element code. In addition, damaging process of the ceramic target and failure mechanism were analyzed. It was concluded that nucleation and growth of a great number of radial and axial cracks played a dominant role in the fracture behaviors of alumina target. Ceramic cone of flat-headed projectile impacting onto alumina target was simulated using Autodyn. As a result, damage zone of ceramic cone increased with the increasing of impact velocity.
