Abstract

The particulate matter(PM) of a diesel engine was sampled by using electrical low pressure impactor(ELPI), volatile fraction(VOF) in PM of the diesel engine was analyzed by the thermo-gravimetric analysis(TGA) when the engine was fueled with diesel fuel and biodiesel. The results show that the VOF content in PM when the engine is fueled with biodiesel is higher than that when the engine is fueled with diesel fuel. VOF content in PM with smaller size when the engine is fueled with biodiesel is higher than that when the engine is fueled with diesel fuel. VOF content in PM with ultra-fine size (d < 0.100 μm) is higher. VOF content in PM increases from 44.917%(mass) to 70.767%(mass) when the fuel changes from diesel fuel to biodiesel. VOF content in PM with size of 0.100 μm < d ≤ 0.255 μm increases significantly, which indicates that PM has a stronger adsorptivity.
