Novel algorithm for ground target recognition and tracking based on the reference object

Abstract

A novel algorithm for ground target recognition and tracking is presented. Since the remote target in the video is small and is difficult to be recognized directly, the biggest and tallest ground building near the small target is chosen as a reference object. Then, the reference object is recognized with the outline geometric shape features. The location of the small target is decided according to its relative position with the reference object. Finally, the small target is recognized based on contour shape features. The simulation experiment results show that the algorithm has the ability to recognize and precisely track the remote target 2 kilometer away.
