Abstract

In order to solve facility layout problem from quantitative and qualitative perspectives, a layout approach based on simulation optimization and virtual reality (VR) is proposed. Firstly, the layout is optimized from the quantitative perspective through the iteration of simulation model and optimization algorithm. Then the optimized results are transferred into a VR system, in which designers are able to experience and redesign the layout by directly manipulating virtual objects. Finally, layout drawing and facility data are output using a 2D layout module. A case study is presented to illustrate the application of the proposed approach.
