Abstract

An analytic expression for dynamic tensile load-carrying capacity of brittle materials in the case of sinusoidal tensile exterior loading was derived by solving the wave equation together with a finite structural-temporal criterion. The corresponding numerical results demonstrate that the analytical solution is in agreement with the experimental data. The further analysis shows that the dynamic tensile strength and the so-called dynamic increasing factor of brittle materials can be determined by the exterior loading conditions and the quasi-static parameters, thus the strain rate effect of the dynamic tensile strength is not the intrinsic property of materials. Additionally, the analytical solution can also demonstrate that, under constant strain rate, the different dynamic load-carrying capacities can be caused by various different boundary conditions and material parameters. The result is in excellent agreement with the phenomenon of that the dynamic experimental data have intrinsically high discreteness.
