Abstract
In order to study the effect of filler on the rheological properties of ethylene propylene diene monomer (EPDM), the effects of white carbon black (silica), phosphorus-containing flame retardants APP and MPP, and phenolic resin (FB) on the rheological properties of EPDM were studied by using capillary rheometer. At the same time, the Bird-Carreau equation was used to express the viscosity of a coating formulation on the shear rate and temperature dependence. The experimental results show that the viscosity of the system increases significantly after the filler is added, and the flow index (n) decreases significantly. The flame retardants APP and MPP make the consistency coefficient (K) increase from 5.5×104 to 3.8×105, and n decrease from 0.4 to about 0.27. The white carbon black and phenolic resin have the most significant effect on the viscosity of the system, with K increasing to 3.8×105 and n decreasing to about 0.17. Therefore, although the filler makes the viscosity of the matrix increase sharply, the viscosity can be reduced by increasing the shear rate, which is also the basis for the filler to be added to the system to still be able to form and process. Among them, due to the sensitivity of organic filler phenolic resin to temperature, the viscosity of this type of system can be reduced by raising the temperature. At 150℃, the viscosity of the system drops to the equivalent of blank EDPM.
