Chao Lai received his Bachelor's degree in Applied Chemistry (Polymer) from Shanghai Jiao Tong University and his Doctor's degree in Materials Science and Engineering from Shanghai Jiao Tong University. He also did postdoctoral research at Hong Kong University of Science and Technology under the guidance of Academician Ben-Chung Tang (Father of aggregation induced Luminescence). The main research areas include: medical soft material materials, new aerospace biomedical detection technology, soft robots, brain-like organ chips, etc. Has published more than 30 SCI papers in Adv. Mater., Angew.Chem. Int.Ed., Sci.bull., CCS Chem., Macromolecules, J. Mater. Chem. B and other international famous academic journals, and has granted 2 patents. Participated in the compilation of 1 textbook.

Facing medical and material science problems in the national major strategic projects of "Healthy China" and "manned space flight", cross-research based on cutting-edge theories and technologies in medicine, life science, chemistry, materials, optics, electronics and other disciplines will be carried out to develop new models. Main research areas:
1. Hydrogel-based wearable devices;
2. Aerospace biomedical detection;
3. Soft robot;
4. Brain-like organ chip
