The influence of projectile material on mass abrasion of high velocity penetrator

摘要

In order to explore the influence of projectile material on mass abrasion of the projectile, a series of high velocity penetration experiments were conducted using projectiles manufactured with three kinds of material. It is shown that crater depth increases with the striking velocity and projectile material affect the amount of the mass abrasion, which can be evaluated by the Rockwell hardness of the material. Then an erosion model was modified by introducing the hardness. Finally, based on the modified erosion model and cavity expansion theory, a method, which can estimate the mass abrasion amount, penetration depth, and the variation of the nose shape, etc., was developed. The corresponding predictions are in good agreement with the experimental data.
