Polarization mode dispersion monitoring based on auxiliary optical signal gain

摘要

In this paper, a novel polarization mode dispersion (PMD) monitoring method by adding auxiliary optical signal is presented. Based on four-wave mixing (FWM), the PMD can be monitored in all-optical domain by measuring the power of the idler wave. With the help of auxiliary signal, the change trend of idler wave power with PMD will be enlarged, which expands the scope of monitoring and improves the monitoring sensitivity. When the PMD varies from 0ps to 50ps, by analyzing the simulation results of 4 channels RZ-TDM signal with the transmission rate of 40Gbit/s, it is concluded that the signal power requirement of the new device is low, and the accumulated chromatic dispersion (CD) has little effect on the monitoring performance. It is suitable for PMD monitoring of different duty cycle signals with higher speed and more complex modulation formats.
