N2 - The exposure of designers to external stimuli has long been proven to be an effective means of influencing the ideation potential of designers. In this article, the authors further investigate the effects of inspiring designers with functional terms as stimuli. Based on the empirical results of an experiment involving 20 novice student designers, it was found that functional terms as stimuli help to significantly increase the usefulness, novelty and variety of design ideas generated by the participants. At the same time, this approach does not negatively constrain the design thinking, i.e., it does not necessarily lead to design fixation.
