Dynamic Time Slot Allocation for Mobile Ad Hoc Networks using Directional Antennas

摘要

Directional antennas have several advantages compared to omni-directional antennas: higher gains, more robust against jamming and denial of service, etc, which make it favorable to use in mobile ad hoc networks (MANET). Combined with Time Division Multiple Access (TDMA) Medium Access Control (MAC) protocol that could achieve conflict-free data transmission, directional antennas provide significantly greater throughput. A crucial part of directional MAC protocol is time slot allocation, yet current allocation schemes cannot achieve a desirable balance between throughput, traffic demand and fairness. This paper proposes a novel, distributed as well as real-time time slot allocation scheme that adapts to the varying topology of the network and traffic demands, and at the same time decreases the control overhead of the algorithm. In such a scheme, each node will only have to collect the traffic demands from all transmitting nodes instead of from the whole network; in addition an innovative traffic demand geometric reduction algorithm is employed to guarantee the throughput as well as fairness of the network. Simulation results indicate that the proposed scheme can ensure both fairness and throughput according to each node's traffic demand in MANET.
