N2 - Delayed reconfigurable manufacturing system (D-RMS), a subclass of reconfigurable manufacturing system (RMS), was proposed to solve the convertibility problems of traditional RMS. The core philosophy of D-RMS is to maintain partial production capability through postponing reconfiguration to latter stages of manufacturing system. Configuration design is necessary to implement D-RMS with the consideration of postponing reconfiguration. Therefore, a configuration design method of D-RMS is proposed in this paper. To cater for the demand of intelligent manufacturing, the industrial robot is considered during configuration design as well. Two illustrate examples are provided to show the effectiveness of the proposed configuration design method.
