摘要

The concept of the bounded variation quantity (B. V. Q. ) is proposed as a local feature of patterns. It is applied to both waveform analysis and picture analysis. In waveform analysis, the B. V. Q. is described by using the concept of bounded variation functions. The B. V. Q. is an excellent feature for the purpose of detecting the starting time of P wave in seismic waves. The B. V. Q. can also be applied to the estimation of standard deviation in an independent Gaussian process. The merits are (1) the easiness of compution, (2) the improvement of the convergence-ratio.
