Assessing the Cognitive Load Arising from In-Vehicle Infotainment Systems Using Pupil Diameter

摘要

The purpose of this study is to assess the cognitive load arising from in-vehicle infotainment systems (IVIS) of intelligent connected vehicles (ICVs) by analyzing the changes of pupil diameter of drivers in the simulated driving environment. Cognitive load refers to the amount of mental activity carried out by the working memory of the human brain at any time. The cognitive load here is emphasized by arising from IVIS. Thirty subjects participated in the experiment. The experiment simulated an urban road and asked the subjects to complete three levels of the auditory continuous memory task. Tobii Pro Glasses 3 was used to collect the pupil diameter of drivers, and NASA-TLX was used for subjective evaluation. The results showed that task difficulty level had significant effects on the mental dimension and effort dimension of NASA-TLX, which have been proved by relevant studies to be evaluative dimensions that can reflect cognitive load. In addition, task difficulty level also had a significant effect on the pupil diameter, indicating that the pupil diameter can reflect the cognitive load arising from IVIS. Findings from this study can provide reference and assistance for the design of IVIS.
