摘要

Atomic force microscopy (AFM) revealed two features of the surface structure of Linde type A (LTA) crystals for the first time. The first is that LTA crystals contained fine pyramidal structures lying side-by-side. All of the pyramidal edges were parallel to the edges of the cubic single crystals. The second feature is that the sloped sides of each pyramid had fine steps of different heights (0.7, 0.5 and 1.2 nm). These three different heights correspond well to the sizes of a double 4-ring (D4R) and combinations of D4R, suggesting that D4R is the key building unit for crystal growth of LTA. These results demonstrate the potential of using AFM to reveal the fine surface structure.
