Adsorption of trace phenol and formaldehyde in water with hydrophobic silica aerogel

摘要

Silica aerogel, due to its properties of highly porous, low density, high surface area and nano-size pores, has potential applications in adsorption. The adsorption of trace phenol and formaldehyde in water on a hydrophobic silica aerogel was investigated. The effects of on the adsorption of the temperature, the hydrophobility of the aerogel were studied. The adsorption equilibrium characteristics were determined. The adsorption capacity for phenol is 1.93mg/g, which is higher than 0.92mg/g for formaldehyde. Increasing the hydrophobility of the aerogel could enhance the adsorption capacities for both organics. The isothermal adsorption equilibrium curves could be modeled by using Langmuir equation and Freundlich equation.
