N2 - In this paper, the concepts of proximity and characteristics credibility are introduced according to the road surface characteristic parameters and the feature of adjustment procedure in antilock braking system, based on which a comprehensive road surface identification method is proposed, in which the current state of road is judged by the principle of maximum proximity. The results of a large number of road tests show that no matter what braking manipulations taken by driver in the course of antilock braking control, the method proposed can achieve a precise identification of all kinds of road surfaces including dry asphalt, snow & ice roads, bisectional and butt-joint roads, etc.
