Abstract

Atmospheric turbulence is a major factor limiting the transmission distance of free space optics communication. A novel weighted clustering algorithm based on polar coordinates is proposed in this letter, which can not only solve the error convergence problem of existing Cartesian coordinate system-based algorithm, but also effectively increase the maximum achievable transmission distance of the FSO systems. The effectiveness of the proposed algorithm is verified using commercial simulation software, which can achieve up to 14.1% maximum transmission distance increasement, proving that the proposed scheme is a practical alternative to traditional decision algorithms in future long-reach FSO communications.
