Abstract

In an optical engine, the visualization investigation of the combustion process of diesel/biodiesel blended fuels was implemented by high-speed photography and the flame images were acquired. Based on the two-color method, KL factor which indicated the integrated soot concentration in the cylinder was obtained from the flame image in order to analyze the effect of biodiesel on the combustion and soot formation in the cylinder. The results show that with the increase of biodiesel proportion in the blended fuel, the maximum combustion pressure gradually reduces, ignition delay increases and combustion duration decreases. In addition, the luminosity and distribution area of the flame reduces. The maximum KL factor is also reduced as well as the distribution area of rich soot concentration decreases and the process of soot oxidation is speeded.
