Abstract
A transparent compression ignition engine was developed based on an in-line 4 cylinder diesel engine. The engine, equipped with high-pressure common-rail injection system could operate at 1200 r/min, injection pressure and injection rate shape were adjusted flexibly. A broad visual field was provided by the transparent quartz liner and the quartz window in piston for laser measurement. The pneumatic device for dynamic seal and quick removal enhanced the quartz liner security and shorted cleaning time of the quartz window to 10 minutes, thus increasing utilization rate greatly. Combustion characteristics research fueled with biodiesel was carried out by using high speed photography and two color method. The engine reliability and practicality were verified. Results reveal that under high-pressure common-rail split injection conditions, the luminosity, distribution area and high temperature (above 2000 K) zone of the biodiesel flame reduces compared with the diesel flame. Owing to biodiesel oxygen-enriched, it may restrict in-cylinder soot formation and improve soot oxidation in combustion process later period.
