Abstract

To explore the performances of hydrogen internal combustion engine (H2ICE) and vehicle, based on the modification of a 2.0 L gasoline engine, H2ICE and vehicle have been successfully developed. Bench and vehicle testing were carried out. Test results show that, while power and torque outputs are 40% lower than gasoline engine, the indicated and brake thermal efficiency of H2ICE could reach 40.4% and 35%, respectively. The H2ICE vehicle has a good emission performance. NOx emission is mainly affected by the fuel-air equivalence ratio of mixed gas. Tested NOx emission is only 0.057 g/km, compared to the level of national IV standard, which is decreased by 28.75%. CO and HC emissions of H2ICE vehicle are also significantly decreased. The system of H2ICE and vehicle work normally and the dynamic properties meet the development requirements.
