Abstract

The infrared image detail enhancement technique was regarded as a significant scientific branch of the image processing and important practical applications. It could enhance the human observation ability to the tiny weak objects and improve the perception to the important image contents and key detail information, as well as supply a kind of effective image pre-processing method for the further applications such as target identification, target tracking, machine vision and so on. The current widely used algorithms and mainstream key techniques of the infrared image detail enhancement were reviewed, and their advantages and disadvantages were pointed out on the basis of many-year research, experience and dedication to this area. Meanwhile the advantages of the detail enhancement technique and the high dynamic range (HDR) compression based on the high precise A/D image data (14 bits) was discussed especially, and finally the perspective to the development and effective applications in the near future was given.
