Research on the strong magnetic field for pulse MHD generator

Abstract

Aimed at the especial requirements for strong magnetic field in pulse MHD generator, a new scheme of magnetic circuit with soft iron was presented to obtain high and uniform magnetic flux density in a large volume. The flux density in a region was calculated by using Maxwell 2D/3D simulation software and the influences of soft iron, magnet material and other factors on the magnetic field were analyzed. The simulation results show that the soft iron can increase the flux density by 21.4% and improve the magnet field uniformity by 2%, compared with no soft iron, the soft iron thickness has an optimum value, and the increase of magnet inner coercive force can enhances the magnet flux density evidently. A magnet of 104 mm×360 mm×500 mm for pulse MHD generator was manufactured and installed in laboratory. The test results show that the average magnet flux density can be up to 1.24 T and the uniformity of magnet field exceeds 95%.
