Abstract

The polyampholytic superabsorbent polymer was prepared through graft copolymerization of dimethyldiallylammonium chloride (cationic monomer) and acrylic acid (anionic monomer) onto the chain of carboxymethyl chitosan. The structure of the graft copolymer was characterized by IR. The equilibrium swelling ratio (Qe) of the polymer prepared at different molar ratio was studied. Influence of the pH value of the solution on the water absorption property of the polymer was discussed. It is found that the influence of the ionic strength on the swelling ratio at different pH value is different from that of the polyelectrolyte superabsorbent polymers.
