Abstract

Aim To achieve higher bandwidth efficiency and more coding gains and reduce the implementation complexity of encoding/decoding. Methods The schemes of concatenating RS (Reed-Solomon) codes with bandwidth efficient P-TCM (pragmatic trellis coded-modulation) 8 PSK or 16 PSK codes were proposed. Their performances on Gaussian channel were investigated by analysis and computer simulations. Results When the BER(bit error probability) Pb= 10 -4 the concatenated coding schemes can obtain additional 1 dB coding gain over only one code's P-TCM systems. When Pb=10-7 they can obtain extra 3 dB coding gains over P-TCM. Conclusion As Pb decreases, the concatenation systems of RS codes with P-TCM can get much more coding gains over the single code P-TCM. systems.
