Abstract

The Quality of Service (QoS) related concepts of Data Over Cable Interface Specification (DOCSIS) are studied and performance improvements based on DOCSIS for Geostationary Orbit (GEO) satellite networks are proposed. A predictive method that can forecast how many data packets will arrive in the MAC layer is adopted. Moreover, the request/grant mechanism in DOCSIS is analyzed when it is used in GEO satellite networks. The simulation results show that the request/grant mechanism in DOCSIS is not suitable for GEO satellite networks. The improvement based on the request/grant mechanism is proposed in this paper. In addition, the fragmentation flowchart in DOCSIS is redesigned and the simulation result shows that it has a better performance.
