Abstract

To calculate pedestrian crossing capacity at signalized intersection, a time-space occupancy method is proposed. Two signalized intersections in Beijing, located at Zhongguancun Street with North 4th Ring Road and Huangzhuang Street, were investigated by video and manual survey. The data include length and width of intersection, green time for pedestrians, walking time in intersection, and space occupancy of pedestrians. Pedestrian crossing capacity was calculated by time-space resources and minimum average pedestrian time-space occupancy. Error of the model results and field data were only 11.0% and 5.8% for the 2 intersections. Comparison results show that capacity model formulated based on time-space occupancy can be applied for intersection planning, design, control and management.
