Abstract

With the aid of computational fluid dynamics (CFD) method, the spray characteristics of bio-diesel fuel and diesel fuel were simulated using the results of visual experiment, and a 3D simulation model was established and validated. The spray characteristic difference between bio-diesel fuel and diesel fuel was studied. The spray penetration and the sauter mean diameter (SMD), which were influenced by the diameter of the nozzle hole, were studied by means of this model. The results show that the atomization process of bio-diesel fuel is different from that of diesel fuel and diesel fuel has a better atomization characteristic. Decreasing the size of the nozzle hole can shorten the spray penetration, and smaller size of nozzle hole can enhance the breakup and atomization of the fuel droplets.
