Abstract

Channel-aware mode is one novel technique in EVS codec to improve error robustness for VoIP, which uses forward error correction by transmitting re-encoded partial copies redundantly when the original speech packet is lost or discarded due to late arrival over the IP network. Aiming at achieving the rate flexibility of EVS channel-aware mode for various VoIP applications, as well as further improving the anti-error performance of EVS codec, three new bit-rate channel-aware modes are proposed in this paper for the wideband and super wideband speech respectively. The objective evaluation results of PESQ show that the designed 9.6kbps mode can achieve excellent error correction performance against packet loss. Hence more bit-rate channel-aware modes can be selected adaptively based on the network resources. Besides, the optimal rates are found out among the four bit-rate channel-aware modes for improving the anti-packet loss performance of EVS codec.
