Abstract

Sub/Super-synchronous oscillations (SSOs) were observed in wind farms equipped with permanent magnet synchronous generators (PMSGs). This paper studies mitigating SSOs in PMSG-based wind farms by a synchronous condenser (SC). Impedance models of the system are established to explain the influence mechanism of SC on SSOs stability. The impact of different SC parameters and SC locations on SSOs are analyzed by eigenvalue analysis. Theoretical calculations reveal that SC can promote system stability. Larger capacity and smaller leakage reactance of SC will achieve a better performance on SSOs mitigation. Two installing locations of SC are discussed and equipping a SC at PCC is more effective for SSO suppressing than at the middle of the line. Finally, the influences of SC on the target system are verified by time-domain simulations with PSCAD/EMTDC.
