Abstract

The polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) hydrogels with short PVA fibers added were prepared by mixing the short PVA fibers into PVA solutions, freezing-thawing cycles. The results show that tensile strength of the PVA hydrogels with the short PVA fibers is lower than the matrix hdrogels. With increasing content of the short PVA fibers, the tensile strength of the composite hydrogels increases. It is found that there is a critical content of the short PVA fibers, which depends on the PVA matrix, to reinforce the PVA hydrogels.
