Abstract

The effect of swirl ratio and coefficient of intake flow of each intake port on the rule of regulation of intake swirl is studied for a double-intake-port diesel engine. With the steady flow rig, many tests were accomplished to acquire the performance of intake flow and the adjusted performance of intake swirl of a tangential port and a helical port for two kinds of double-intake-port diesel engines. The method of blocking the inlet of a tangential port was used to adjust the intake swirl. Experimental results indicated that there is a linear compromise between the flow coefficient and swirl ratio of a tangential port in a definite range. By deduction and analysis, it is concluded that when two intake ports are matched in a diesel engine, in order to obtain a well regulated performance of the intake swirl, the flow coefficient of the adjusted port should be as high as possible, the swirl ratio of the adjusted port should be as low as possible, and the swirl ratio of the non-adjusted port should be as high as possible.
