Abstract

The micro-cutting tool is the key element of micro-machining. In the machining process, the cutting edge bears high cutting stress which significantly influences the failure mode and lifespan of the cutter. Based on the analysis on the defect in the design process of the micro-cutting tool, the local stress distribution near the cutting edge was studied for the situation of a large cutting thickness machined by a cutter with a negligible blade radius. The mathematical model of the stress distribution was established and it is deduced that the micro-cutting tool might be damaged due to a too small cutting thickness.
