Abstract
The characteristic and striations in the cylindrical hollow cathode discharge have been investigated experimentally. The voltage-current (V-I) characteristics and the discharge images were measured in argon under different conditions. Results show that the hollow cathode discharge has three distinct stages: As the discharge current increasing, the negative glow grows in length and the striations decrease in amount and resolution. The striation separation increases with the current and related to different stages but decreases with the gas pressure.
