Abstract

This paper reviewed and discussed the following parts concerned with polymer/montmorillonite nanocomposites (PMN). 1. char formation and the structure of char layer; 2. char formation mechanism based on chemical reactions (such as aromatization, crosslinking, catalyzed char formation etc.); 3. char formation mechanism based on accumulation of montmorillonite on the surface; 4. effects of ammonium used for modifying montmorillonite on thermal decomposition and flame retardancy of PMN.
