Abstract

Thermite was used to modify the zero oxygen ratio PTFE/Al energetic materials for improving the mechanical properties. Quasi-static compression tests have been performed on the modified materials and obtained the optimal ratio. A 25 mm caliber gun has been used to transmit the energetic fragments which were prepared based on optimal ratio. The shock initiation process were recorded by high speed photography. The experiments suggest that the modified PTFE/Al is 1.3 times the mechanical strength of pure PTFE/Al. There was a violent explosion at impact velocities ranging from 1084 to 1667 m/s, with penetrating aperture ratio was 1.91~2.54. The new materials has proved to possess reliable shock initiation characteristics.
